BioChat

Communication platform for doctors and patients.

Product context

BioChat connects doctors and patients through separate apps. Consultations and care rely on messaging, video calls and external communication services.

My role and responsibilities

I was the main backend developer and supported mobile app development. I also contributed to infrastructure decisions and environment migrations.

  • Build REST APIs with Laravel and MySQL and implement Redis caching.
  • Implement real-time communication with Node.js, Socket.IO and Redis, and video calls with WebRTC.
  • Integrate mobile notifications, email, SMS, WhatsApp API, Stripe and digital signatures with Lacuna.
  • Work on testing, staging, pipelines, framework upgrades and AI chatbot integration.

Main challenges

  • Support messaging and video calls between separate apps.
  • Connect notification, payment and signature services to the care workflow.
  • Migrate the backend, files and secrets between environments while considering costs and maintenance.

Implemented solutions

  • I configured the connectivity infrastructure required for WebRTC.
  • I integrated external service APIs into the backend and participated in migrations from AWS to Azure and then to a VPS.
  • I used AWS and Azure storage and credential management services during the infrastructure stages.

Technical decisions and reasoning

  • Laravel handled the REST APIs; Node.js, Socket.IO and Redis supported real-time interactions.
  • Environment choices and migrations considered costs, the team’s maintenance capacity and the ease of future changes.

Results

  • The apps gained messaging and video calls, along with notifications, payments and signatures integrated into the care workflow.
  • The backend and its services were adapted to the environments used as the product evolved.
